## Perfection Is Overrated, Progress Matters More

![Maya divider](https://evolve2.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Maya%20divider.png?width=600&height=50&name=Maya%20divider.png)

I used to think perfection was the goal. Every report had to be polished, every slide had to be immaculate, every email had to have zero typos (and yes, I’d re-read them four times before hitting send).

If it wasn’t perfect, I wasn’t satisfied.

But here’s the catch: chasing perfection didn’t make me a better leader. It just made me slower, more anxious, and less willing to take risks. At some point, I realised that perfection wasn’t just unattainable—it was holding me back.![Maya divider](https://evolve2.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Maya%20divider.png?width=600&height=50&name=Maya%20divider.png)

#### The meeting that cracked my perfectionist shell

One of the turning points came during a team meeting. I had been preparing a presentation for weeks, tweaking every detail until I thought it was flawless. When I finally delivered it, I expected applause or at least a few “great job” nods.

Instead, my manager said something I’ll never forget: *“This is excellent, Maya—but you spent so much time polishing it that you missed the window to test the idea earlier. We could have iterated and improved together.”*

It hit me like a splash of cold water. My pursuit of perfection had cost us valuable time. Worse, it had shut my team out of the process. By waiting until I thought it was “ready,” I’d missed the chance for collaboration and early feedback.

That was the moment I started questioning whether perfection was really serving me—or sabotaging me.

#### Why we chase perfection

Perfectionism often comes from a good place. We want to do our best. We want to be taken seriously. For emerging leaders especially, there’s pressure to prove we’re capable, smart, and worth following.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: perfectionism is often fear in disguise. Fear of being judged. Fear of failing. Fear of not being enough.

And the irony? In trying to avoid failure, perfectionists often create it—through delays, missed opportunities, or burnout.

#### Progress over perfection: the mindset shift

The biggest shift I’ve made is reframing my goal. Instead of asking, *“Is this perfect?”* I now ask, *“Is this moving us forward?”*

Perfection is binary—you either hit it or you don’t (spoiler: you don’t). Progress is dynamic—it acknowledges improvement, learning, and momentum. And progress is what leadership is really about.

![Maya divider](https://evolve2.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Maya%20divider.png?width=600&height=50&name=Maya%20divider.png)

#### Three reasons progress beats perfection

1. **It accelerates learning.**
By sharing work earlier, you get feedback faster. You improve sooner. Waiting for perfect delays growth.
2.
3. **It builds resilience.**
Progress embraces mistakes as part of the process. Perfection punishes mistakes. Which do you think develops stronger leaders?
4.
5. **It boosts confidence.**
Each small win creates momentum. Perfection leaves you stuck waiting for a finish line that doesn’t exist.

#### Letting go doesn’t mean lowering standards

At first, I worried that giving up perfection meant I’d start producing sloppy work. But that’s not what happened.

Instead, I started focusing on *impact* rather than appearances. Is this report useful? Does this idea help us move forward? Does this conversation build clarity? That shift kept my standards high—but realistic.

Think of it like art: a sketch can be more powerful than a painting if it captures the idea clearly. Sometimes rough is enough.

#### Practical ways I beat perfectionism

1. **Set time limits.**
I give myself a deadline for tasks and stick to it. If I’m endlessly polishing, I know I’ve crossed from “good” into “perfectionist spiral.”
2.
3. **Share drafts early.**
Instead of presenting a “finished” idea, I now share versions in progress. It feels vulnerable, but it saves time and strengthens results.
4.
5. **Celebrate progress.**
I pause to recognise small wins instead of dismissing them because they’re not “final.”
6.
7. **Ask “what’s the purpose?”**
I remind myself that work is meant to serve people, not my ego. If it works, it works—it doesn’t need gold-plated edges.

#### A funny reminder

I once spent nearly an hour adjusting the font size on a slide deck because one bullet point wrapped onto a second line. When I finally presented it, the projector blurred everything so much that no one could even tell.

That was a humbling (and slightly hilarious) reminder that sometimes, the things we obsess over don’t matter at all.

#### What leaders really model

As leaders, people watch how we work. If we model perfectionism, we create a culture of fear—where people hesitate to share ideas until they’re flawless. But if we model progress, we create a culture of growth—where experimentation, learning, and iteration are encouraged.

And isn’t that the kind of culture we all want to be part of?

### Looking back

Letting go of perfectionism hasn’t been easy. It still whispers in my ear sometimes, telling me to tweak, polish, and delay. But I’ve learned to answer back: *“Perfect isn’t the point. Progress is.”*

Because the truth is, leadership isn’t about flawless execution. It’s about moving forward, learning on the go, and inspiring others to do the same.

Now, when I hit send on that slightly messy email, or share a half-baked idea in a meeting, I remind myself: I’m modelling growth. I’m building momentum. I’m showing that it’s safe to try, fail, and improve.

Perfection might look good on paper. But progress? Progress is what changes the game.
